In the opening fixture of both sides in the 2016 World T20, a beleaguered Sri Lankan side will take on minnows Afghanistan at Eden Gardens Kolkata, on Thursday.
Although they are the defending Champions coming into this game, this Sri Lankan side is a far cry from the one that won this tournament back in 2014.
Back then, they had the likes of Kumar Sangakara and a fully fit Lasith Malinga in their side.
However, with the former taking retirement from the World stage, it is the fitness issues of the latter that have haunted this new look Sri Lankan side of late.
In addition to the absence of key players, Sri Lanka are coming into this game on the back of a disastrous Asia Cup T20 that left many cricket pundits questioning their credentials.
They were knocked out of the group stages of the competition after recording just 1 win in the whole tournament.
However, that win came for them against the same Afghanistan side that they will play on Thursday.
The Afghanis have emerged onto the international stage in 2015 but are still looking for a win against the traditional big sides in cricket.
Looking at the probable starting lineup of Sri Lanka, it is the fitness of only one player which is causing a concern to the Sri Lankan faithful. The unconventional styled Lasith Malinga has come into this tournament with an injury and it is expected that he will watch this game from the sidelines.
Here is the probable Sri Lankan lineup for this particular fixture:
Dinesh Chandimal – Dilshan – Lahiru Thirimanne – Angelo Mathews – Milinda Siriwardana – Chamara Kapugedara – Thisara Perera – Nuwan Kulasekara – Sachithra Senanayake – Rangana Herath – Suranga Lakmal
