Eye Lens Replacement Surgery - Just the Facts
What is eye lense replacement surgery? Eye lens replacement
surgery is a procedure in which the lens of the human eye is removed
and replaced. The replacement lens is an artificially manufactured
lens that will correct some of the major vision problems reported
by many people. To understand the surgery, you first have to have
a basic grasp of the eye. The crystalline lens of the eye is located
on the cornea. During the lens replacement surgery, the surgeon
will make a small cut into the cornea and break up that lens, removing
it through the cut. The artificial lens is then inserted through
that same cut, which will heal on it's own in just a few days. In
this way, the artificial eye lens is substituted with a lens that
should give you much better vision.
How invasive is eye lens replacement surgery?
As with any surgery on the eye, eyelens exchange surgery carries
the potential for damage to the eye or vision problems, both long
term and temporary. Typically, you will not be put to sleep for
this procedure and it will likely be done as an out-patient in a
clinic, hospital or even an office that is equipped for surgeries
of this kind. If you have extensive or severe medical conditions
that create additional risks, you may be admitted to a hospital
for the surgery that replaces your lens, though that is not a common
occurrence.
Who is a candidate for eye lens replacement operations?
There are several reasons a person would be a candidate for this
procedure though it's probably less common than some of the other
surgeries used to correct vision problems. Even those who use require
bifocals can be candidates for the eye lens substitution surgery.
Only your vision care specialist can guide you in this decision.
