invention of soft contact lenses

The invention of soft contact lenses and the world of choices that came with it.

The invention of soft contact lenses has made the once rigorous chore of contact lens care considerably easier. As such they have quickly become the contact lens of choice. Considering switching to contact lenses? Here are just a few basic things you should know:

Contact lenses are most commonly found in two variants: gas permeable lenses and the more popular soft contact lenses. The latter are usually more comfortable, fit more snugly on the eye and are therefore easier to wear because they mold to the eyeball more accurately (hence the reason they're more popular). The invention of soft contact lenses isn't entirely without its drawbacks, however. They require more care in order to remain a safe, healthy alternative to traditional eyewear. Moreover, they are typically more expensive and less durable than gas permeable lenses. Also, people wearing soft contact lenses are usually more susceptible to eye infections and other such complications.

It's Not All Bad News, Right?

Regardless of what type you use it is always a good idea to follow a few basic precautions when handling soft contact lenses (and any contact lens for that matter):

  • Ensure your hands are clean before touching, inserting or removing the lenses.
  • Use the correct, most appropriate cleaning solution with your lenses.
  • Disinfect the lenses properly.

As always, consult your optometrist or medical practitioner before changing your eyewear. But should you already know what you need and are simply looking for the right product, be sure to browse our selection of eyewear solutions to the right.
