Contact Lenses, Dry Eyes - How The Two Are Connected And
What To Do About It
There's no denying that contact lenses have- and continue to
greatly improve the quality of life for a lot of people. But
they can, as a result of mitigating factors such as improper care,
incorrect fitting or an accident, cause eye
fatigue, mild and chronic eye problems. Regardless of the precautions
taken, there is one common ailment that is likely to afflict most
every single Contact Lenses wearer at some point in their lifetime: dry eye.
Because, by the very nature of what they are, contact lenses prevent
oxygen from getting to eye. It is this lack of moisture that, obviously,
results in dryness.
Dry eye can quickly become something of a vicious circle because
lacking sufficient lubrication the contact can serve to further
irritate your eye. It is after all, at least in the body's estimation,
a foreign object that shouldn't be there. This can lead to itchiness,
redness and a considerable amount of discomfort. Failing to address
the situation can lead to severe eye problems. While your environment
(when flying on a plane for example, there is less moisture in the
air) and other health conditions can exasperate the problem, solutions
exist in the form of more effective contact lenses as well as eye
drops, otherwise referred to as 'rewetting tears' or 'artificial
tears'.
In the case of the former, ophthalmic technology has increasingly
seen improvements in this area (soft contact lenses are better able
to facilitate oxygen movement to the eye than GP lenses, for instance).
Contact lenses from leading manufacturers such as Acuvue
and CIBA Vision make
use of patented technology to provide enhanced comfort and extended
wear capabilities. Speaking of which, serious ocular ailments are
most common among Contact Lenses wearers who keep their lenses in
while sleeping. Although many brands offer the convenience of continuous
wear it is recommended by most eye care professionals that they
be removed at night.
Eye drops, as previously
mentioned, remain a simple, affordable solution to preventing excessive
dryness of your eyes and it's advisable to keep some close to hand
should you regularly suffer from dry eyes. Also simple and affordable
are the many eye care products on offer to the right of this page.
See those links? Yup, those ones. They're all that stands between
you and the eyewear solution you've been looking for.
