Cromolyn sodium 4% eye drops

Cromolyn sodium 4% eye drops take the itch out of allergy eyes

Itchy, irritated eyes? If you suffer from eye allergies, your physician may recommend cromolyn sodium 4% eye drops. Cromolyn sodium eye drops are available only by prescription and can offer allergy relief.

When are cromolyn sodium eye drops recommended?

These eye drops are prescribed to treat eye disorders associated with seasonal allergies. Cromolyn inhibits the body's release of certain allergy-related chemicals, including histamine. Histamine is a naturally occurring substance in the body that causes allergic reaction symptoms, such as swelling, itching, sneezing, watery eyes and hives.

Your doctor will determine the proper use and dosage of cromolyn sodium eye drops for you. The eye drops' anti-allergy effect might not be felt for days to weeks after product use begins, however.

How do I use cromolyn sodium eye drops?

Your doctor will tell you how to properly use cromolyn sodium eye drops. In general, you can follow these guidelines:

  • 1. Before you use the eye drops, wash and dry your hands thoroughly.
  • 2. Tilt your head back. Apply gentle pressure to the inside corner of your eyelid. Use your index finger to pull downward on your lower eyelid to make a space for the dropper and medicine.
  • 3. Using the dropper, drop the physician-recommended amount of medicine into the space and close your eye.
  • 4. Apply gentle pressure for 1 to 2 minutes to the closed eye, then release and open your eye. Wash your hands thoroughly before putting medicine into your other eye.

To avoid contamination, make sure the tip of the dropper does not touch your eye, finger or any other surface. If your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse, check with your doctor.

What are the side effects of cromolyn sodium eye drops?

Serious side effects are rare and include a rash or redness around the eyes, eye swelling, red or bloodshot eyes and serious eye irritations. More common side effects include temporary burning or eye stinging. If you have questions about side effects or your prescription, talk with your doctor.
