Some of the problems from wearing contacts too long?
There are many advantages to wearing contact
lenses over eyeglasses. These advantages include better
sight for many, a natural field of view (eyeglass frames can obstruct
peripheral vision), no fogged-up or water-splashed lenses, and,
many feel, an improved appearance. However there are complications
associated with wearing contact lenses. For example, what are some
of the problems from wearing contacts too long?
Wearing contacts too long
Wearing your contact lenses for too long can lead to eye conditions
that require treatment. Some of these conditions include:
- Corneal damage. Wearing
contact lenses for too long can damage the eye's cornea. Contact
lens overuse essentially starves the cornea of oxygen. The result:
blurry vision, pain, excessive tearing, redness and sensitivity
to light. If these symptoms occur, you should remove the contact
lenses immediately and consult an eye care professional.
- Corneal warping. Overuse of contact lenses also can lead to
corneal warping. This is a condition in which the cornea changes
shape due to lack of oxygen. The result: uneven or fluctuating
vision. If you experience these symptoms, you should remove the
contact lenses and consult an eye care professional.
- Bacterial or fungal infections. Wearing your contact lenses
for too long also can result in bacterial or fungal infections.
These infections are rare, but serious, and usually occur in those
who use extended-wear soft contact lenses.
Eye care for contact lens wearers
With contact lenses, it's important to follow your eye care professional's
direction for proper use-and don't leave in your lenses for too
long. Not doing so can lead to serious eye problems.
