Implant Contact Lenses Give Cataract Patients A New Look At Life

Cataract patients used to be condemned to two possible fates. Either they could let the disease progress and face blindness, or they could submit to surgery and the need to wear awkward prescription lenses for life. This isn't the case any longer thanks to Implant Contact Lenses. This medical break through has made it possible for former cataract patients to see the world in a whole new light.

An implant contact lens works in a similar manner to regular contact lenses. The only difference is that the implant contact lens is actually attached to the eye. These implants are used replace the body's own natural eye lens that has to be removed during cataract surgery. The removal is done to protect the eye from the ravaging effects of cataracts.

The benefits of the implant contact lens are many. Although they might not work for everyone, the basic perks include:

  • Two types of lenses. An implant contact lens can be either a monofocal lens or a multifocal. The monofocal type corrects vision at a single distance and might require the use of glasses. Multifocal lenses are meant to correct vision at different ranges and they typically negate the need for corrective lenses.
  • Ease of the procedure. Having an implant contact lens put in is not a very big deal. This is usually done during an outpatient procedure at the same time the cataract is removed. This means there's no need to schedule two surgeries or even to expect the need to stay in the hospital for more than a few hours in most cases.
  • Relatively affordable. This procedure when done to correct age-related vision impairment or cataracts isn't as expensive as many might think. It can, in fact, only cost a few thousand dollars an eye.

The implant contact lens procedure is relatively quick and fairly painless. It does have other applications, but not all patients are candidates. It is a good idea to carefully review the procedure with a physician before deciding if it is the right route to take.
