Myth Busting - Contact Lenses Do Not Fuse To The Eye
Contact lenses, just like all modern inventions, have their own mythos built up around them. Those who use them understand the facts, but many who don't allow themselves to get scared away by that which they don't understand. One of the major myths that surrounds their wear is a belief that contacts can get "stuck" to one's eye.
While the myth serves to scare many a potential wearer away, it is just that - a myth. The fact of the matter is that contact lenses cannot get stuck to one's eye. Although they can serve as an extra protective barrier for other things injuring they eye itself, they do not stick and cause damage.
They can, however, be a little tricky to remove on occasion. This is where proper lens care and use becomes paramount. Those who wear contact lenses can relax, they won't become fused to the eye. Other issues that can crop up with their use can be avoided by:
- Following proper disinfection procedures. Clean a contact lens as it is recommended. This means a full disinfection and wetting treatment before putting them in the eye. Don't forget the neutralizing step to avoid irritating the eye.
- Only wearing them as directed. One-week contact lenses are not meant to be worn continuously for two. Follow the direction correctly to avoid irritation, infections and red eye.
- Replacing them as instructed. Many contact lenses today are meant to be disposed of. Don't try to save money by reusing lenses that have worn out their useful period.
Contact lenses are the subject of a great deal of myths. When it comes to their ability to fuse to the eye permanently, this one is just plain false. They do require proper care, however.
