Debunking The Myth Of The Popping Contact Lens

Many people fear wearing contact lenses will lead to a life of searching around on the floor for missing or lost lenses. Stories about lenses just popping out of eyes at inopportune times persist, adding fuel to this fear's fires. Fortunately, this little problem of lenses is a thing of the past. Unfortunately, not many people realize this is so.

Like many myths, the popping contact lens one is firmly rooted in the truth. The fact is old, hard contact lenses use to do this on occasion. Not created to flex and move with the eye, these lenses just sometimes came out. This, of course, had the potential to lead to a day of disasters as a lens wearer sought out the missing contact.

This fear is no longer a valid one thanks to newer contact lens technology. The popping lens problem has been resolved as a result of:

  • Soft contact lenses. These newer lenses are not only infinitely more comfortable than hard lenses, they also stop the falling out issue. Since these lenses flex and move with the eye, there's no fear of them coming out. They simply are not rigid like their old fashion predecessors.
  • Fittings. When contact lenses are properly selected and properly fit, they should stay snuggly in place no matter what a wearer does. Since lenses are no longer one-size-fits-all, concerns and worries about them falling out are valid no more.

Much like many other persistent myths, the one about popping contact lenses does have its roots in the truth. Newer materials and better fitting procedures, however, have invalidated this concern for lens wearers.
