Need a change? With today's Coloured Contact Lenses, you
can choose between subtle enhancements or dramatic new looks
According to 2002 study by CyberPulse, the personality trait
most associated with brown eyes is intelligence. For those with
blue eyes, sweetness is the trait that prevails. If you want to
create a whole new you, or you just want to enhance the looks you've
got, give coloured contact lenses a try.
A rainbow of coloured contact lenses
The four types of coloured contact lenses are visibility tints,
enhancement tints, opaque colour tints, and light-filtering tints.
Many of these coloured contact lenses are available in plano form
(which means without visual correction), as well as for people who
have astigmatism, who need bifocal correction, or who want a disposable
or frequent replacement lens.
- Contact lenses with a visibility tint are not for cosmetic
purposes. These lenses usually have a light blue or green tint,
but they do not really affect eye colour. They are coloured solely
to help the user better see the lenses when inserting or removing
them.
- Colour contact lenses with enhancement tints are used
to "enhance" the user's existing eye colour, making
the eyes' colour more intense. Enhancement tints don't work well
for users who want to change their eye colour completely. Enhancement
tints are usually best for people with light coloured eyes who
want them to appear darker.
- Opaque tints are colour tints that are used to dramatically
change eye colour. Opaque tints can be used to create a slightly
different look or a more extreme one. Users can change their brown
eyes to blue or vice versa. In addition to brown and blue coloured
lenses, users can choose from a wide variety of colours, including
green, hazel, amethyst, violet, and grey.
- Light-filtering tints are fairly new to the coloured
contact lens market. Light-filtering tints are designed for sports
use, because they enhance certain colours while muting others.
For example, a tennis player might use a light-filtering tint
lens with optic yellow. The result: The tennis ball stands out
against background colours and is thus easier to see. Tennis fans
can wear the lenses, too-to improve their vision of the match.
Different variations of this lens are in development for athletes
including golfers and skiers.
How do you get coloured contact lenses?
Coloured contact lenses require a prescription, whether or not
the lenses are for vision correction. An eyecare practitioner must
choose the right lens size, shape, and material for the user's eyes.
Users who wear coloured contact lenses that don't properly fit won't
be comfortable and could develop serious eye conditions, including
infections. Coloured contact lens wearers, like all contact lens
wearers, should see their eyecare professional at least once a year
to make sure their eyes are healthy and the lenses fit properly.
Where can coloured contact lenses be purchased?
With your prescription, you can purchase your coloured contact
lenses from local drugstores and a variety of online sites, many
of which offer discounts. For information about the coloured contact
lenses that are right for you, please talk to your eyecare professional.
