A brief history of Bausch&Lomb; following WWI they produced America's first glasses and innovative sunglasses for military wear

Bausch & Lomb, the leading eye care company, recently celebrated its 150th anniversary (in 2003). Established in 1853, when German immigrant John Jacob Bausch established a small optical goods shop in Rochester, New York. Following Bausch's promise to repay a debt (of $60) to his good friend Henry Lomb, the name of the company was changed to Bausch & Lomb.

Following World War I Bausch & Lomb produced America's first homegrown optical glasses and developed innovative sunglasses for military wear. In the middle part of the last century the company's camera lens were the first used by satellites to take pictures of the moon. As if this were not enough, in 1971 the company was the first company to introduce soft contact lenses for easy, convenient and healthy wear. In this regard, today the company is still the largest producer of contact lenses eye care products.

Today the company still continues to center its operations, which in 2003 included revenues of $2 billion, from its Rochester headquarters. The company currently employs approximately 12,000 people in its offices, shops and outlets in over 100 countries.
