Eye Fatigue

A closer look at the modern causes of Eye Fatigue

It certainly seems like there are more of us suffering from Eye Fatigue than was the case with our forefathers.

The following are some ideas of modern life that may be the root cause as to why we have greater levels of eye fatigue today:

  • Television: although our parents and grandparents had television, with today's satellite television we have more channels and more choice. This combination means that we are spending greater and greater amounts of our leisure time indoors watching television. This is sure to have put a strain on our eyes.
  • Computers: unlike our forefathers, modern man uses the computer more and more. Not only do we tend to use it in our day-to-day work life, but greater and greater numbers of us also elect to have a home computer, or two! We even now have WiFi laptop computers to take to the coffee lounge with us. This level of visual display unit (VDU) exposure tends to cause our eyes to become dry and imports a greater level of eye fatigue.
  • Reading material: although our overall purchase of books has actually decreased in modern times, we seem to have a greater choice of reading material. Add to this the fact that 80%, or so, of our day-to-day reading is of materials generated in the office, and you could argue that we are actually reading more. Another reason why we may have more eye fatigue today.
  • Driving: traffic has become one of the headaches of modern life and with greater numbers of cars on the road comes greater concentration/eye strain.
  • Pollution: the higher level of polution that modern man lives with, especially in the big cities around the world, adds to the overall level of stress being put on our eyes.

As you can see then, there does appear to be more of a reason why modern man is suffering from eye fatigue than was previously the case. Fortunately though, we also have advances in eye-care development to help us combat these higher fatigue levels!
