Determine if Rigid Gas Permeables are the right contact
lense for you
Rigid Gas Permeables also known as RPG contact lenses are the
latest and most advanced hard contact lenses. Invented in 1985,
when soft lenses were already 15 years old, Rigid Gas Permeables
turned out to be a long awaited solution for people who, for different
reasons did not cope well with the old lenses.
The old hard contacts were made of 'polymethyl methacrylate' and
did not allow any oxygen to flow through. Rigid gas permeables on
the other hand are made from modern polymers and contain silicon,
which permits oxygen flow and make them more flexible than the old
hard contact lense. And as you may know your eyes need a lot of
oxygen.
Advantages of Rigid Gas Permeables
-
Excellent for people who are very critical about the crispness
of their vision. Your visibility with RGP's is very constant.
-
Rigid gas permeables can be polished if needed.
-
There is no buildup of natural deposits from your tears onto
the RGP unlike soft contact lenses.
-
Rigid gas permeables are stronger than any other contact lense;
they might last for years.
-
The shape of the contact lens does not change when you blink.
Some people experience a temporary blurring when blinking with
soft contact lenses.
Disadvantages of Rigid Gas Permeables
-
You need to wear Rigid Gas Permeables on a regular basis in
order to have a continous comfortable wear. They need some more
time getting used to than the soft contact lense.
-
Alternating Rigid Gas Permeables with regular glasses is difficult
because it will take some time before your eyes are re-adjusted.
-
RGP lenses need some care on your part. They need some light
rubbing with a solution. Your optometrist or RGP manufacturer
will recommend a cleaning system for you. (Rigid Gas Permeables
do exist as 1-month night and day contacts; these need far less
care).
